Web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and Beyond

The Module 1 handbook mentions the term Web 2.0 on many occasions. To gain a better understanding of this I have researched the World Wide Web and how it effects society and me personally.

The World Wide web can be broken down into 3 distinct stages of growth these are:

Web 1.0 - STATIC WEB

Web 2.0 - PARTICIPATING WEB

Web 3.0 - SEMANTIC WEB

I am going to briefly discuss these 3 stages to hopefully allow you to better understand each one.

WEB 1.0

Web 1.0 is known to many as the "Static" or "Read Only" web. During this time web developers/publisher released their content and the users passively read/absorbed the information given. There was very little in the way of user interaction or participation.

Above is an example of a Web 1.0 site. It is very basic in terms content and layout and there are very few ways for the user to leave feedback or participate on the website.

WEB 2.0

Web 2.0 is known as the "Participating Web" and will be more familiar to us as avid users of the internet.

Web 2.0 allowed users to actively participate and react to a website in many different and new ways. It spawned the creation of Social Media websites such Facebook and Twitter. Allowing us to share content about anything in just a few clicks.

The websites themselves also become more advanced and dynamic. Large video files were able to be shared for the first time prompting the invention of sites such as Youtube and Vimeo to name a few.

Above is an example of a site that utilises many Web 2.0 features. There are options to like and comment on peoples posts and also post whatever you would like. A stark contrast to the previous example of Web 1.0.

WEB 3.0

Web 3.0 or the "Semantic Web" is the stage of the Web that we are in at the moment. In Web 3.0 the computer autonomously suggests content to the user that it believes they want to see. It can anticipate what the user wants based on our past web habits, location and time of day to name a few.

An example from www.expertsystem.com says:

In Web 3.0, while you are driving, you can simply ask you cars assistant a question for example “I would like to watch a romantic movie and eat Japanese food”). The search engine embedded in the car assistant provides you with a personalized response that takes into account your location, suggesting the closest cinema that matches your request and a good Japanese restaurant by automatically consulting the reviews on social media. Then it might even present a 3D menu from the restaurant in the display.

In Web 3.0 the computer "cares" about what you want as an individual. Web 3.0 is characterised by machine learning, automation and artificial intelligence.

THE FUTURE

We are rapidly heading into Web 4.0 or the "internet of things" which will be fully autonomous and universally connected.. With "smart devices" having a major impact in our homes already and self driving cars becoming a reality and not merely a fantasy in science fiction we can only speculate as to what the future holds.

I for one am very excited about the future. With what is happening to my industry and practice at the moment we will need new, innovative ways of sharing our passions and love for theatre with audiences and I believe technology will play a huge part in this.

  1. Really interesting blog Tom. I have also been researching Web 2.0, but my knowledge of Web 3.0 was still a bit poor. Thank you for sharing :) x
